A day of freedom

I have nothing to do tomorrow. I cannot remember the last time I literally had nothing planned for an entire day. What to do? I will have to pick Carson up at summer school at 10, but after that, the day is ours. We've been making several trips a week to the library for books, movies, and magazines. Maybe we'll stop by again tomorrow. Maybe we'll come home and scrapbook. Maybe we'll take a nap. Maybe we'll watch a long forgotten Disney movie and eat popcorn on the couch. Who knows?!?!

Today I made a trip to Fredericktown for work. It was uneventful. Greg and I had been throwing around the idea of canceling our home phone service and going strictly cellular. This scared me at first, but the more I thought about it, it really was ridiculous for us to be paying for 3 phone numbers for two adults. I made a trip to Cingular and signed us up for the Family Talk plan. Our phone bill will now be $60 per month instead of the massive $150 that we have been paying for the last 2 years. This really makes me sick considering all we had at home was a basic line with caller id. Did I mention that I quit my job at SBC after 3 weeks? I hate them. They wanted me to sell voice mail to people in nursing homes. Hello! Are the residents really gone so long from their rooms that they need Deluxe Call Notes to check the one message they may have waiting on a good day?!?!?

I went to Weight Watchers a day early and was down 3.6 pounds! Yay, me! That whole "the program only works if you work the program" thing is finally setting back in. I am determined to be a svelte matron of honor at Mary Catherine's wedding in April. (I've recently dubbed the occasion the McWedding. I'm not sure if she'd like that. Are you reading this, MC? ) I sure wish the McNewsletter would come so I can get the link to my fabulous, coral colored, bridesmaid gown. I am gonna look damn good by April!

Speaking of McThings. I broke my vow to never set foot in a fast food store last week. Actually, I was only in the drivethru, and I was starving, but I still haven't forgiven myself. I ordered the Fruit and Walnut salad at the Kennett, MO McDonald's. It was 5:00. They were out of Fruit and Walnut Salads. I had to pulll forward while they made one. I have since wondered if I was the first F&W salad order of the day or if they actually sell that many F&W salads at the Kennett McDonald's. Turns out I paid $3 for a sliced apple, 6 grapes, a teeny bag of "candied" walnuts (healthy?) and about 2 Tbs of some sort of sugary yogurt type dip. I still hate McDonald's.

Greg put a hit counter on the ol' blog tonight. I'll be curious to see how many of my faithful viewers are tuning in. 'Til tomorrow!

Wearin' Next to Nothin' 'Cause It's Hot as an Oven!

We roasted to a nice crisp at the Cardinal Game yesterday. I have never been so hot for so long. We were sitting in Big Mac Land and we even made an appearance on the JumboTron if any of you were watching last night. I was the only one in my party wearing the complimentary yellow hardhat given to all Big Mac Land ticket holders. I had on a white shirt and was waving my arms frantically to all of my adoring fans. Did I mention that it was unbelieveably hot?!?! Also, since when does the sun stay out at full force until 7:30 pm?? We had a great time, despite the heat and my unruly 3-year-old. Heat, confined spaces, and no nap make for a very grumpy little guy. I really wish we would have gotten a room and stayed to do something fun today. I could have finished the roasting process and been quite brown for the start of the week.

Today we are staying home to do laundry and get caught up on household stuff. I will be scrapping sometime today and couldn't be happier. Thankfully, this is a light travel week for me since we have swimming lessons every night. I will also be walking for 30 minutes this evening. I started a new weight Watchers walking program and today's activity calls for 30 minutes of walking at any pace. The past 2 days have been 45 minutes, so tonight should be a breeze. Check in with ya later! Have a great Sunday!

If Greg ever helps me figure out the whole picture posting provess, I'll post some pics from the game.

A Boy After My Own Heart

As we were getting ready to leave for PawPaw's house today, Carson looked at me, sighed, and said,"Mom, can we just stay home and scrapbook tomorrow?" I just about melted. This has been such a busy week and it's catching up with us all. I think we will stay home and scrapbook tomorrow as soon as we go pick up my paycheck.

It was officially 100 degrees at the Franklin homestead today. As soon as we got in the car, Carson declared, "Mom, it's too hot out here! Let's go back in the house where it's cold!" How I wish we could have spent the day relaxing inside in the air conditioned comfort of our basement. My first appointment called to cancel just as I pulled in their driveway. The second apppointment went well, given that the 19-year-old mother and 16-year-old father are the new parents of twins born at 24 weeks gestation. He works at Wendy's and she will be returning to work at the Dollar General store soon. My life could be much worse.

I was able to make a trip to Scraps N More www.scrapbooknmore.com today to spend my gift certificate. I went over by $7.68. Pretty good for the amount of stuff I got. Gotta love the employee discount! I plan to spend tomorrow afternoon and evening at my scrap table. Pure Heaven!

Carson is doing great at swimming lessons. We have one more week. He has already declared that he will be jumping off the diving board next Thursday. He did it twice last year and came up smiling both times. What a little fish!

My in-laws leave for Canada for 2 weeks on Saturday, which means my babysitter (PawPaw) will be unavailable. My mom is taking off next week to watch Carson and hopefully, I'll be able to have a light work week the following week. We'll see!

Overworked

I am so tired. After my 300 mile journey yesterday, I came home, changed, went to water aerobics, came home, made dinner, cleaned up, and finished reading"Samantha's Letters to Jennifer," (which is a good tear jerker by the way) and collapsed into bed at 12:00am. I was up at 7:00 to get Carson ready for school and to leave for my first of 5 appointments today. I need a day off. It seems like I have no time to get everything caught up. Stopping to read last night was a luxury and I paid for it tonight by having to miss Carson's second swimming lesson in order to finish paperwork. It seems crazy to me that so much paper is involved in order to help babies. I haven't met a baby yet who cared about paperwork.

A lovely teen mother at my noon appointment told me to quit asking nosey, f****** questions, or I could get the f*** out of her house. I had no idea that asking how long someone was in labor and when they began receiving prenatal care was so nosey. In my 3 years of asking these same, required First Steps questionnaire questions, I've never offended anyone before. There's a first time for everything.

Another first happened yesterday. For the first time in my career, a duck was present at one of my meetings. He just came waddling through the living room while I was talking and the family seemed to think this was perfectly normal. His name is Lucas and he is not housebroken. It was rather stinky during the meeting. He lives with a spanish-speaking family, but he still said "Quack!" like an English-speaking duck. :) I have learned to expect the unexpected and go with the flow since I began working with families in their homes. You just never know what's going to happen.

Tomorrow I have another round of appointments all day and swimming lessons for Carson tomorrow night. I am hoping to make it the scrapbook store this week to spend the gift certificate I received from my sister-in-law for my birthday. I got the gift certificate yesterday. My birthday was April 20. Better late than never. I am off to bed and I couldn't be happier. Have a great Wednesday!

Greetings from Kennett, MO!

Well, 3 1/2 hours to go before my last appointment in Senath! I found the Kennett library and it is as nice as it looked on the web. I just managed to get the last computer to waste some time until 4:00. Greg just called to inform me that he needs to bring food to work tomorrow, so I'll be making a trip to Kennett Walmart in a couple of hours. It's actually a much nicer Walmart than the one in Jackson. It has a huge Latin food section for all of the migrant workers in this area. Speaking of migrant workers, I am really hoping that someone who speaks English will be at my last appointment. This could get interesting. I've already traveled 150 miles today and I still have to drive all the way home. I am hoping to make it home with time to spare before Carson has to be at the pool for lessons. We'll see! I'd better get off the blog site before the librarian sees me.Blogging is not allowed here. Crazy! Have a terrific afternoon!

Home from the Holidays!

There's nothing like covering 4 states and 3 major holidays in 48 hours! We had a great time at Holiday World! We probably could have spent another day there, but given that it was Father's Day, we called it a day early and left for home around 1:00. Holiday World had lots of things for Carson to do and he had a blast. The pictures will be on his website by tomorrow. www.carsonfranklin.net. Greg and I rode both of the roller coasters, which were very good for wooden roller coasters. We also rode Zinga and Zoombabwe at Splashin Safari. We would have done all of the water slides, but it was so crowded that we spent an hour and a half waiting in line for the two we did ride.

We stayed in Owensboro, KY, the self-proclaimed BBQ Capitol of the World. We had lunch at the famous Moonlite BBQ and it was awesome. Their specialty is BBQ mutton, but none of us were adventurous enough to try it. The ribs, BBQ pork, potato salad, mac n cheese, and peanut banana salad that I had were great. Definitely eat there if you're ever in Owensboro.

When we got home, we went to my in-laws for a while to visit Greg's brother, sister-in-law, and nephew. We hadn't seen them since January and we had a nice, quick visit before bringing Carson back home for bed. Tomorow he starts week 2 of summer school and week 1 of swimming lessons. He likes the water much more this year, so we're hoping he does well at lessons.

I am working in Dexter, Caruthersville, and Kennett tomorrow. I have a 4 hour break between Caruthersville and Kennett, which really sucks. I went online and found that Kennett has what appears to be a very nice library, so I may be blogging from there tomorrow. It will be kind of nice to have an excuse to hang out and read without interruption for 4 hours. I'm also going to start eating better tomorrow. I feel terrible from eating tons of junk this weekend.

That's it for now! Hope everyone had a great weekend and have a fabulous week!

Exorcism

If I believed in demons, I would swear that one had possessed my son yesterday. I have never seen him have such a bad day. I had one appointment yesterday, which happened to be near my in-laws house, so I dropped him off for about an hour and a half. He whined and cried to stay when I returned, and I should have agreed to leave him for the afternoon. The fun started as soon as we got to Walgreens to copy some pictures. We arrived at the store at the time he would usually be starting his nap. He was awful. Each time I put a new picture on the scanner, he would grab my arm, requiring a second scan. Some poor woman needed a passport photo taken and the clerk asked me to move our cart. For some reason this sent Carson into a screaming fit like I have never seen before. The poor lady asked the clerk to hurry so I could move our cart back. As always, the 1-hour photo was taking 2 hours, so we set off to find a Father's Day gift for Greg. Carson calmed on the way to the mall and was relatively good at JC Penney. He began screaming "I don't like this store!" as soon as we entered Old Navy. The tantrum lasted until I gave in and bought the 4th of July red fishing hat that he insisted on, even though he refuses to keep hats on for more than 5 minutes. We left Old Navy with the promise of a cookie. After purchasing our cookie, fit 4 began when I stopped at a bench to eat and refused to let him out of the stroller. We left quickly to cross the street to meet Greg at Logan's for dinner. Apparently, Carson thought we were still at Lambert's (home of throwed rolls) because he proceeded to pull his grilled cheese into tiny pieces and pelt unsuspecting passersby. We ate quickly and left for Walgreen's. I insisted that Greg follow us there to sit in the car with Carson while I picked up the pictures. (I had orderded special sizes and wanted to make sure they were correct.) We made it home and I left to meet Lisa for a long walk. I came home an hour and a half later to find Carson playing peacefully in the living room. This ended as soon as I mentioned a bath. Carson began the most horrific fit I have ever seen him throw. As Greg struggled to remove his clothes, Carson was screaming, "Get away! I don't want you! I don't want a bath!" The bath was quick and the fight to get a pull-up on began. I watched the drama from the safety of the couch. Carson flailed and screamed on his bedroom floor as Greg tried every possible angle to get the pull-up on. By this point, Carson was so exhausted that he could barely walk. He stumbled into the living room and climbed into the chair with Greg. (The guy he wanted to "Get Away!" five minutes earlier.) He argued with us that he did not have to pick up toys for several minutes before Greg plopped him in the floor and began helping with the clean up efforts. Carson was asleep within 2 minutes of hitting the bed. He slept for 11 hours and seems fine this morning. I will not be picking him up from PawPaw's house in the middle of nap time today. Lessons learned: missed nap=miserable parents and 6 year child development degree is rendered useless when dealing with a sleep-deprived 3-year-old. We'll let him sleep from now on.

A fine day!

After yesterday, I was so ready for a leisurely day today. I had one appointment in Scott City at 1:00, so I spent the morning working on paperwork , went to my meeting, and was at the scrapbbok store by 1:45 with my supplies in hand. (Actually, they were in a tackle box and my XXL rolling scrapbook tote-it's very heavy. Some may say I have a little problem with buying supplies, but it's all in the name of preserving family history!) I spent 3 hours chatting with Dwana, the owner, and working on my cruise album. It was a nice afternoon.

I left the store at 5:00 and headed for home. My mother-in-law picked me up at 6:15 to leave for our Bunco group.Bunco is a dice game with 12 players. We meet on the campus of SEMO and play 2 games. Prizes are awarded at the end. It's totally a totally mindless game and is more of an excuse to eat and gossip with the other girls in the group. I formed the group last September and we've been growing strong ever since. I seem to always be the one forming the groups and taking the lead. It's a little exhausting, but I get things done. I actually find it very strange that other people don't initiate things. Or maybe they do and don't invite me. Perish the thought! I guess the I am a true first-born overachiever, destined to be the one in charge. I also really don't understand people who aren't "joiners." What the heck do they do with their time? Not that it's bad to stay home, but I would be bored to death if I wasn't involved in tons of activities. Anyway, off my soapbox.

I just have one appointment again tomorrow, so I may get some more work done on our cruise album. My friend and workout buddy, Lisa, is meeting me at the park to jog tomorrow night. She's up to 2 miles and I am stuck at 1/4 of a mile. We've been doing the Couch to 5k program, but I have really started to wuss out. I can walk 3 miles fast with no problem and I can jog 1.5 miles on the treadmill at the gym, but when I take it outside, it's all over. Something about this horrid Missouri humidity paired with my chronic ashtma.

I realized today that I have not only fallen off the Weight Watcher Wagon, I'm pretty sure I'm eating it's dust. Tomorrow I vow to begin the Core program to get all the junk out of my system. I feel so much better when I eat right and workout, and I refuse to be "the chubby bridesmaid" at Mary Catherine's wedding in April. Back to the routine in the morning. Have a fantastic Wednesday!

Holy Smokes! What a day!

For those of you who aren't familiar with my job description, I basically drive to people's homes to work with their children who have special needs. I drive to many places, sometimes up to 2 1/2 hours from my house. Today was one of those days and it did not go well.

I began my adventure at 7:45am when I left my house bound for scenic Cascade, MO. It's more of an area than a town, given that the only store (that also housed the post office) has boards on the windows and a huge "For Sale" sign in the lot. It never ceases to amaze me how many people cannot give directions to their own homes. Case in point, the mother of client number 1 gave me the completely wrong road number today. I spent 45 minutes looking for a road beginning with 300. Her road is number 206. Did I mention that I had been out of cell phone range for 45 minutes and that I really had to go potty?!?!I finally found the house just when I had decided that I was in such dire straits that I was going to have to find a bush and drop the pants. The mom had the nerve to ask why I was 45 minutes late and she had left 3 messages on the cell phone that had no coverage. Give me a break!

I left Cascade bound for Park Hills, one hour away. When I was within 30 minutes of my destination, I called to make sure the family was home. The mother answered and stated that she had forgotten about an appointment and needed to cancel my visit. I agree and schedule her for the 28th. I pull into the A&W at Farmington and order a diet rootbeer. I am now bound for a leisurely stroll through Value City. My phone rings. It's the same mother. The family has cancelled their other appointment and is now at home. They want me to come right away. I leave Value City and drive to Park Hills. I follow the mother's directions and wind up in Desloge, MO. (Home of the greatest WalMart ever!) I call and she explains that when she said "past the truck stop", she really meant "turn left at the truck stop". Really. How do these people function? I stay for 20 minutes and it is very obvious that this child is in no way needing therapy. I leave for Arcadia, MO

Drive was uneventful. I arrive 30 minutes early and stop at the Whistle Junction, my favorite place to by candles. They are closed. I drive around for 20 minutes and suddenly remember that the other therapist wanted me to come early while she was at the home. Crap! I meet her there and stay for an hour. I decide to drive back to Farmington to visit Value City. I get sidetracked and end up at the nail salon near Value City. I get a manicure and pedicure and talk with a very interesting Vietnamese nail technician. I go to Value City, spend $50, and leave for home. I am tired of driving on winding country roads, so I decide to cut over to Ste. Genevieve to catch the interstate back to Jackson. I happen to pass O'Dear What a Memory, a scrapbook store, on this route. (Ok, so maybe this was preconceived, but I really thought she would be closed at 5:30). Deb was placing an order, so I got to shop for a few minutes. She went on the cruise with us, so we had a lot to talk about, My phone rings, I answer, and Greg automatically says, "You're at the scrapbook store, aren't you?" I deny my location until Deb laughs and gives me away. I ended up with an album for the cruise pages and some paper for our trip to Splashin' Safari and Hoiliday World this weekend.

I finally make it back to Jackson and meet Greg, Carson, and my in-laws at The Branding Iron for dinner. We make a quick trip to Ashley Furniture to look for a new couch and loveseat and I finally walked back in my door at 8:30. I am whooped. I came home to two cancellation messages for tomorrow, and I am so happy. (not happy that one of my clients has Scarlett Fever, but grateful for the time off!) Carson has been running a temp all afternoon, so he may be home with me tomorrow. Tomorrow night is Bunco and I think I have Wednesday off. Friday evening we leave for Santa Claus, IN with my parents to visit Holiday World. Should be fun. 'Til tomorrow!

Yay! I have a blog!

After many months of eavesdropping into the lives of others through blogs, I finally decided to take the plunge. My friend and fellow cropper (scrapbooker), Brooke, told me yesterday how easy it was to set up a blog and when I saw how cute her family blog is, I decided to go for it. Welcome to the craziness that is my life!

This weekend was relatively quiet. Saturday was filled with scrapbooking during the day and a trip to Lamberts with out friends, Rob and Becky, and their boys, Matthew and Jacob. The boys had a great time playing on the wooden train outside while we waited for our table. The food was great, as always. Everything was going smoothly until Carson transformed into "Hot Roll Boy" and started throwing pieces of his roll back at the roll thrower. Things went downhill from there. The boys seemed to feed off each other's rowdiness and we were all ready to head for home as soon as the check came.

Today we went to Sunday school and skipped church to get to Cape before all of the church goers. We found a new duvet set and 2 sets of matching sheets on sale and we are finally ready to begin our bedroom transformation. The pattern is called Cabana Beach. Sometime during our cruise, my husband morphed into "Island Greg" and he can't seem to get the Caribbean out of his mind. I'm hoping the bedroom makeover will suffice and that he will take a break from trying to find me jobs in the Caribbean. Probably not. We are also redoing Carson's room in a surfer theme and we picked up a few things and some paint chips for his room today also.

This week is going to be so busy. I have to work every day and we are leaving for Holiday World with my parents on Friday. Things should fly by! Thanks for stopping in!
