Resolutions

Hello Readers! Long time, no blog. We had a wonderful Christmas and I'm looking forward to getting back in a routine.

I spent today getting the house back in order and thinking of what I hope to accomplish in the new year. Here are my 2006 resolutions:

1. Plan our meals and stick to the plan. We spend entirely too much money eating out. It shows on my check register and my butt. I spent today cleaning out the pantry, fridge, and freezer. I found mustard that expired in 2004. Scary.
2. Use my gym membership and my Weight Watcher dues. I have to lose a lot of weight and get my blood pressure under control if we're going to have any more babies. I also feel like crap and can't fit into my clothes. That's pretty good motivation. I'll be having my "Last Supper" on Sunday. Probably something really greasy that will make me feel horrible and remind me how much I need to lose weight and exercise.
3. Get out of debt. We want everyhing but the mortgage paid off. We'll be driving our beater cars and eating at home in our little starter house for awhile. Oh well, I have enough scrap stuff stockpiled to outlast armageddon. I'll be fine.
4. Say "NO" more often. I would like to feel far less "obligated" this year. My family misses me.

I think that's plenty to shoot for. Good luck to you all whatever your resolutions may be!

The 13 days of Christmas

I am freeeeeeee!!!! 13 days off with pay. This is why I went to school for so long. I am preparing to wrap the last of the presents in a few minutes and then I should be finished, save for my nephew's scrapbook. That will be the project for the next few nights. Thankfully, my nephew won't be here until the week after Christmas.

Carson is so excited about Christmas this year. He shouts, "Mommy, look at those pretty lights!!," every time we're out at night. He opened the first of his many gifts on Sunday and was so appreciative and excited, it made me proud. I hope he's as enthusiastic at the rest of our "Christmases". We've got 3 down and 4 more to go. Makes me tired just thinking about it.

I've cut way back on my holiday activities this year and it feels pretty nice. I've onlt baked 2 batches of cookies and I've left the fancy homemade ribbon bows off of the gits this year. They usually fell off by the time they reached their destinations anyway.

Carson and I will be attending his preschool Chirstmas pajama party in the morning. He had a blast last year and the kids look so cute dressed in their PJs. I'm already pictureing hte scrapbook page. :)

Keep warm and be merry! It may be awhile before I get back to blog. Have a fantastic Christmas!

4 things I'm thankful for today:

1. an easygoing boss...I came in at 9:00, took a lunch, and left at 3:00.
2. My goofy, sweet husband who is willing to go back out in the freezing cold several times a night to fetch things I thought I left in the car, that were actually under my rear end.
3. My coworkers-what a crazy bunch of girls. Man, do we have fun at work!!!
4. Christmas-the best gift of all.

Gratitude

It's late and I've had a wonderful day. Here are a few things I'm feeling very thankful for.

1. My husband. We laughed so hard, so many times at each other today. We are both crazy and I'm glad we can appreciate each other's wacky sense of humor. Also, how many other husbands would put the Christmas lights up in the snow just to make their wives happy? I'm a lucky girl. :)
2. My goofy little guy. He showered me with sweet kisses today.
3. My girlfriends. I love you guys! Long live the Crazy Croppers!
4. My in-laws. How cool that I'm as comfortable in their home as I am in mine.
5. My mom. She's taking me to a dinner theater show tomorrow and I love doing stuff with her.

Gotta hit the hay! I have to be at church in 7 and a half hours. Have a fabulous Sunday!

It's been a long time...

I am still alive. Christmas preparations, 4 jobs, church work, a husband and a 4-year-old are not leaving me much time to do anything but eat and sleep lately. The trees are up, the house lights are up, the presents are wrapped and the cookies will be baked this weekend. I am looking forward to Christmas more this year than I have in a long time. 12 days off!!! With pay!!!!! I plan to stay home and catch up on my scrapbooks, with very minimal leaving the house. Yay!!!!!

On a depressing note, I have completely and totally fallen off the Weight Watchers wagon. Did you hear the thud? It grows bigger every day. I have lost all motivation for journaling and exercise. I feel like crap, but the efforts seem futile this time of year. Hopefully, the realization that I'll be wearing a pink bridesmaid's dress in 3 1/2 short months will hit me soon. Pray for it to hit me hard!

Carson and Greg are well. Carson just got a new set of braces for his legs and we'll be starting visual therapy the week of Chirstmas to help with his lack of depth perception. He has visited with Santa twice so far and has told everyone that he wants a Thomas the Train roundhouse, mittens, and candy canes. I think that can be arranged. :)

Well, time to head upstairs. It's freezing in our basement and I still have to finish my nephew's scrapbook album before Christmas. I'll be starting on it a few minutes. Nothing like scrapping a year's worth of pictures in a weekend! Be Merry!

What a Girl Needs

This is a complete steal from Dawn's blog, a blog I enjoy reading for her witty observations and because I have total envy of the fact that she lives close enough to Disney World to trot on over to Epcot any given night of the week.

The basic idea is to google what you need--for instance i googled "Amy needs"--and then post the first 10 results.

Amy needs to either wake up or start getting some extra will-power. I don't
believe that Amy needs sex.* I am fully awake. I definitely do need extra willpower. No comment on the sex.

Amy needs support from others who have been there.. Is this a major hint to get my ass back to Weight Watchers?!?!?

A fellow Amy needs your help. Not a problem. I hardly ever say "no"

Amy needs a new pair of shoes I agree.

Amy needs help for life hmmm...I do?

We have fought for seven years to get the
attention that Amy needs to be found Well, I've been here in Jackson for about 29 years.

Amy needs to learn to start helping around the house Hah! I think this should read "Greg"

This site hopes to be your number one source for all of your Amy needs, This must be a site that offers purses, shoes, jewelry, and scrapbook supplies

If, however, Peter won't compromise in this way, Amy needs to decide if this
fits her idea of a good relationship," I don't know anyone named Peter

Amy needs to get another facial expression for deep ponderance - I haven't had time for deep ponderance for several months

Go "google" yourself. Ya know you want to! I'm outta here until Sunday. We'll be in Nashville all weekend taking in some shopping, celebrating my nephew's birthday and visiting the fabulous Opryland Hotel's Christmas lights. Have a great long weekend!

Brought to you by the letter S...

S stands for lots of things. This week it stood for shopping, singing, seeing, sleep, and unfortuantely, snot. Sorry if that's too much info.

Let's start with shopping. In a span of 72 hours, I made 2.5 trips to St. Louis and shopped at 3 different malls and various specialty stores. It was a very successful shopping venture. I only have Greg and his brother left to buy for on my Chirstmas list. The 2.5 trips were not by choice.

On Thursday, I took Carson to see his eye specialist in St Louis. We'll be starting a home therapy program with monthly vision therapy visits to St. Louis. The doctor thinks Carson only has about 60% of the peripheral vision that he should and very little depth perception. There's nothing we can do to make it better, so we'll be helping him learn to compensate for what he's lacking. We stopped at Crestwood Mall on the way home.

On Friday, I had to work in Arnold all day. My coworker dropped me off at South County Mall, where I shopped for 3 hours while I waited for Greg to drive up from Cape so we could go see Mark Schultz in concert. (No point in me riding to Cape just to turn around come back when I could be shopping!) The concert was awesome (hence the "singing" I mentioned. I sang really loud to try to drown out the horribly tone deaf man next to me. It didn't work.) We spent the night at the Drury Inn and shopped at West County Mall Saturday. This is where the sickness and snot come in.

I am sick. I've felt bad all week, but last night on the way home, I really felt bad. Today I felt worse. I started an antibiotic and some heavy duty decongestants today and I'm a little better tonight. I have to leave for Jefferson City on Tuesday and won't be home until Friday. It's going to be in the 20's at night. I'll probably get sicker. Hopefully, not. My friend, Heather, and I are sharing a room, so for her sake, I really hope I'm not snoring all night from the congestion. I bought her some earplugs just in case.

That's pretty much it, kids. I'll be back late Friday night. I have one more week long work trip in a few weeks, then I should be finished with overnight travel for a long time. Yay!!! I have no laptop and the Fairfield Inn has no business center, so be good while I'm gone.

Friendship, Construction, and Christmas Songs

I am so lucky to have so many friends. I've had a pretty rough week at work and have been super busy at home. My friends are so good to me and if it weren't for them, I'd probably be curled up crying in the corner by now! Without going into the boring details, I'll summarize my work week by saying that I felt very overwhelmed and underappreciated this week. My friend, Heather, stopped by my desk this morning to let me know that she thinks I'm doing an awesome job and the reason I'm so overwhelmed with requests for help is because the last two people who had my position screwed things up so badly. That made me feel much better. I can handle fixing other people's screw ups as long as I know that I'm on the right track.

Today was another not-so-great day. I was stuck in construction traffic for 45 minutes this morning and had a mountain of reports to write at work. Luckily, I had plans to go to a party with my good friend, Becky. (Hi Becky!!!) We had a blast spending the night out together. We went to the party (a SHOPPING PARTY!!!!!), ate at Red Lobster (where we each had a yummy Bahama Mama), and then took our time going ailse by aisle through Target until they turned the lights out. I purchased several more Christmas presents that I'll be staying up to wrap tonight. On the way home, we noticed that 104.7 FM is playing Chirstmas music. I really like Christmas music, but isn't it a bit much to start the Christmas tunes 4 days after Halloween?!?! It did help me get in the mood to wrap the presents that are piling up in our basement. Ho! Ho! Ho!

I also got the chance to stop and chat with Greg's cousin, Rebecca at her store this week. I always have a good time talking with her and I hadn't seen her since Carson's party. We talked for over an hour. It was great to catch up.

In the morning, I'll be heading to St Louis with one of my oldest friends, Mary Catherine, to look for bridesmaids' dresses. I'm going to be the Matron of Honor in her wedding next April. I can't wait to hear everything she has planned and help her with the things that still need to be done.

So all in all, I've had a great "friendship" week. Thanks to all of you that I call "friend". I love each and every one of ya!

Don't hate me beacause I'm organized...

but I now have gifts purchased for 3/4 of the people on my gift list. I must say that I rock this year. I don't know why, but I am terrified to not have my shopping done by Thanksgiving this year. I usually do most of my shopping that weekend, but I think I'll be done way before then. Now, finding time to make all my handmande stuff may be a different story. Shop On!
Don’t Fall For It
from The Friday Five

1. What do you like or dislike about autumn? I love the changing leaves, the trips to the pumpkin patch, hayrides, bonfires, carving pumpkins, and deciding what to be for Halloween. There's not much I dislike about it.

2. Have you raked leaves into a pile just to jump in them? When I used to babysit for this one particular family during all SEMO football games, I'd rake huge piles of leaves in their backyard so the kids and I could jump in them. That was some fun stuff.

3. Have you ever carved a pumpkin and how did it turn out? I carved one last week at our church's fall festival and it turned out pretty well. It is the outline of a rather scary cat. We'll carve the rest of our pumpkins tomorrw night.

4. Have you ever eaten anything made from pumpkins other than pie? Pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, and I've been craving a pumpkin pie blizzard from DQ.

5. Where is a good spot to see the leaves change color where you live? There is a spot on I-55 near St. Genevieve that always takes my breath away no matter what season. As you top the hill, the trees are absolutely beautiful right now. I thank God for the wonderful show each time I pass by. :)

City Sidewalks, Busy Sidewalks or maybe not

Hello Blog Readers! Yes, I'm still alive! Things have finally settled down for a few days at the Franklin household and I have a couple free moments to blog. :) We have been well, but busy as we begin the approach to the holiday season.

Yesterday we worked at a Fall Festival at our new church site. It was an awesome day and we had a great time having fellowship with our church friends and members of the community. I am so excited to start attending contemporary worship services at the new site next Sunday. The sanctuary is beautiful and the sound system sounds great. In the most respectful way I have to say, "Yay, God!!!!" I hope the church is successful beyond our wildest dreams in reaching out to the unchurched population in our town. We'll see next week!

Today we went to Sunday school and then went with another couple to St Louis. They had complimentary seats to a concert performance by the St Louis Philharmonic orchestra. Our tickets said the name of the concert was "Holiday Pops, " so we were pumped and in the Christmas spirit all the way up. We had a great dinner at Blueberry Hill and arrived just in time for the opening song. Greg went back to the lobby and returned with programs that said "A Tribute to America." Interesting, didn't sound like a holiday themed title. It actually was holiday themed, but more like Independence Day than Christmas. Nevertheless, the music was awesome and we had a good time. We may go back in December to hear the "Holiday Pops" performance. We topped of the evening with a stop at Krispy Kreme for some hot doughnuts and cold chocolate milk. I am now paying the price and may be up all night with a stomach ache. :( Those doughnuts sure were good. All three of them.

This week is work Monday through Thursday and a trip to St Louis for a conference on Friday. Greg and Carson are going with me to the conference. We're planning to go somewhere fun when I get finished Saturday afternoon. Always nice to take the family on a free work trip.

I have begun my Christams shopping and I'm on a mission to have it completed by Thanksgiving this year. I think it will be great to be able to put all the gifts under the tree as soon as we put it up at Thanksgiving, and hten sit back and enjoy the season without fear of the mall. I say this, but I'll probably end up just buying additional gifts even if I'm already finished with my gift list. I'm having trouble thinking of much that I want this year. There's still plenty of time for me to browse though!

Have a great week! Hopefully I'll have time to check in again soon! -Amy

Pumpkins! and Leaves! and Scarecrows! Oh My!

I love Fall. I realized this morning on my scenic drive to Fredericktown, MO just how much I loe this season. There was a chill in the morning air and the leaves were beginning to colors everywhere I looked. Fall displays were seen all along the roadway and Halloween costumes were prominently displayed in the windows of a secondhand store I stopped in. What a great day.

Today was also a good day career wise. It was awesome to return to the diasatrous child care center I visited a few weeks ago and see that the teachers and director have made a huge effort to implement my recommendations. What a total turnaround from my last visit. To see the children playing happily in a stimulating environment was well worth the years of school and studying I did get here. I am so proud of these teachers for being willing to learn and giving my ideas a chance. Yay Preschool!

This week will be busy as usual. I'll be starting my night class in a few minutes. tomorrow I finally get to play Bunco, which I have missed for the last 3 months due to work conflicts. I am so excited! Wednesday night is Bible study and Thursday I'll be staying in St Louis to attend a conference Monday morning on hearing impairments. I don't know a lot about the topic, so I hope to get lots of useful information. This weekend I'll be working at the Women's Show at our Child Care Resource and Referral booth all day Saturday. Come by and say "hi"! I'll have free cookie cutters for ya! Sunday we plan on heading to Begg's Pumpkin Patch for some Fall fun. Have a great week!

Dear Blog Readers,

I apologize for my extended leave of absence. I have been busier than heck for the past week and a half and I was simply too tired to remember to blog. Here's a brief update of what's been going on in the Franklin household:

Carson's birthday party was a huge success. The kids loved the activities and the jump-o-saurus was a big hit. It was huge. Even bigger than we could have imagined. Greg and I had fun jumping as well, as did my grandma, spry little thing that she is. She even went down the slide. Too cool.

Sunday we went to the zoo with my in-laws and Greg's brother and nephew. It was hot, humid, and Carson was on day 3 without a nap. It was not the most enjoyable trip to the zoo. The boys had a great time at Fitz's Rootbeer watching the soda being bottled and drinking rootbeer floats. Carson had a meltdown at the zoo and I had a meltdown on the way home due to a little too much family togetherness. Things are better now.

Monday I went back to St Louis (yes, less than 12 hours since I had gotten home from the zoo in St. Louis) to a meeting for work. That evening we went to Red Lobster for Carson's birthday dinner. Greg's mom baked him a small cake and he opened his gifts from us, Greg's parents, and Greg's brother.

Last night I worked in the basement trying to get something accomplished on the scrapbook swaps I joined that are due on Friday. I'll be doing that again tomorrow. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. I'll be cropping form 4-10 on Friday and I am so ready for the break.

Saturday we plan to put all of our summer outdoor things away and clean up the yard. Sunday we have a birthday party and church. Next week I'm in St. Louis overnight and I 'm looking forward to the quiet.

Pictures of our recent adventures are posted on Carson's website. www.carsonfranklin.net

Thanks for stopping by!

Days go by

Was it really Wednesday when I last blogged? My how the time has flown. I ended up having Wednesday and Thursday off this week and worked yesterday and today.

Carson had an eye appointment on Wednesday. The doctor suggested he may not yet have developed depth perception, which is why he contiues to fall often and sometimes run into things. She thinks his occupational therapist at school should be able to do some exercises with him to improve the probability that he will develop depth perception. I really like his doctor, but I really dislike when doctors and other medical professionals talk down to patients, or patient's parents in this case. I politely left without saying much, but I wanted to say, "So you honestly believe that an occupational therapist spending 30 minutes a week with Carson at school is going to help remedy such an important issue?!?! How about a referral to a visual therapist, or a developmental optometrist?!!?" I've found both on my own, by the way. We'll be calling for an appoitment next week. It's times like these that I'd really like to have my resume tattooed somewhere to say, "Look here! I'm educated too, so don't talk to me like I'm a moron." One more reason to start working on that PhD. It would be so nice to introduce myself as Dr. Franklin. :)

Today I worked at a seminar put on by my workplace. Over 200 child care providers attended. It went really well and made me realize how comfortable I am in my new job and how much I enjoy being part of a university. I was approached during the seminar to teach a different class in the spring. The class is called "Child Life in Hospital Settings. " I loved the course when I took it during graduate school, but I never dreamed I'd be asked to teach it. It's an upper level course, unlike the freshman level courses I've been teaching. I think it will be great to have students who already have the basics down and are ready to get into some more in-depth material. It scares me a litttle that I could potentially have graduate students in my class, but I'll get over it. I had to stop myself from taking over the presentation from the speaker in the room I was helping in at the seminar. I like being the teacher. ;)

This afternoon we went to a birthday party for Jacob, my friend Becky's, little boy. She had the party at Pioneer Apple Orchard and it was great. We had a hayride, picked pumpkins, ate apples, and roasted hotdogs. Here are some pics:

Riding to the pumpkin patch

Dirty-faced boy

Tomorrow, we're going to early church and then to St Louis to let Carson pick out something for his birthday and possibly take him to the transportation museum if the weather is good. He is crazy about trains and we've never been to the museum before. Should be a fun day! His party is next Saturday and I've just about got every thing under control. If everyone comes, there will be 42 children there. Oh my! My mom has helped greatly. Thanks Mom! Have a great Sunday everyone!

Ten Kindnesses

Name ten kindnesses shown to you this week.

1. My friend, Becky, offered to watch Carson while I go to his parent/teacher conference tomorrow. She is always so good to me when I need her. :)

2. My mom has been taking Greg to work this week while our truck is in the shop, which makes my life a whole lot easier.

3. Donna, the mom of a child I visit for therapy, gave me the prettiest pillow just because I said it was pretty. Last week she gave me 2 chicken alfredo boxed dinners because I said I couldn't decide what to fix for dinner. She also always asks how I am and is genuinely concerned, even while her child is still struggling with medical issues.

4. My friend, Nancy, agreed to teach my night class on Carson's birthday so I can be home to celebrate with him.

5. My friend, Syd, stopped by my desk just to see if I needed help with anything at work.

6. My friend, Brooke, emailed some pictures of Carson and his class at the fair to me on the very same day they went to the fair. I had to work, so it was great to see the pics so soon.

7. Heather thanked me for sharing a craft idea for MOPS with her and made it sound like I had come up with a solution to world hunger.

8. The waiter at Buckner's cheerfully served my rowdy Sunday school class for 3 hours on Friday night, even though I'm sure he wanted us to get the heck out of his table space.

9. My Bible study class welcomed me so warmly to the last five minutes of class last Wednesday when I was late returning from Jefferson City.

10. Greg only called me one time while I was gone getting a manicure, pedicure and shopping at Target by myself for 3 hours last night. He was even pleasant and didn't even ask when I planned to come home. Carson was in bed and the house was somewhat in order when I got home.

I tag Becky and Brooke to list ten kindnesses on their blogs. I'm feeling very blessed after taking the time for this list. Have a great Wednesday!

Down Time

I made it through the week Surprisingly, I actually got almost everything finished that I needed to do this week. Last night we went to Buckner Brewing Company with our friends from Sunday school. I realize that it's a little strange for our Sunday school class to meet at what is essentially a bar, but this is one of the only places we can always get a table for 15 on a Friday night without an extra charge for a room. We had a blast. Our class has grown into such a tight knit crew over the 3 years since we started the class. We laugh so hard when we get together outside of church. (The two wedding cake martinis I had may have helped with the laughter. :)

Today I'm teaching a class at the scrapbook store at 11 and then we're taking Carson to see March of the Penguins this afternoon. My boss's sister gave everyone I work with 2 free movies tickets that expire on the 22nd. They have to be used through the week or before 4 on the weekend, so today is the day. Carson does pretty well in the movies, so I hope he'll enjoy this one. It's pretty sad that this is the only movie that would be suitable for a preschooler. What happened to having at least one kid friendly movie at all times? I'll stop before I launch into "children are valued so little in this country" rant.

On Thursday, Carson and I attended the first ever Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) meeting in Jackson. We had a great time. I'll be helping with crafts from now on. If anyone knows any 20 minutes or less crafts for adults, send them my way. We have to keep the prep and assembly simple and inexpensice, but we want to make sure we offer neat projects. Carson attends the MOPets while I go to my meeting. He never has a problem seperating from me, but he really didn't have a problem at MOPs. He was so excited to meet his new friends that I could barely keep up with him when we were trying to find his classroom. He's really into having friends right now. Everywhere we go he wants to know if his friends are going to be there.

Tomorrow I have a bridal shower to attend in the afternoon and church in the morning. It will be so nice to have an evening at home. My class has been postponed for a week or two until they have my contract ready, so I'll be home on Monday night too! I'm so excited about having nothing to do! Have a great weekend!

On the road again

I'm leaving in about an hour for Jefferson City. I've worked all morning to get the laundry caught up and the house clean. Woe to any male members of this household if things are not as I left them when I return tomorrow night. I think they'll be fine. I am planning to spend this evening shopping at TJ Maxx and then chillin' in my hotel room by myself while I sort through all of my scrapbook paper and put page kits together. I also need to finish working on my Bible study homework. I have work that I could be doing, but I decided that tonight is for me. No distractions. I have vowed to quit buying scrapbook supplies unless I actually have the pictures to match the paper in my hand. No more buying because the paper is cute and thinking that I'll remember to take pictures of Carson eating M&M's to match the cute M&M paper I had to have. I just donated literally hundreds of pieces of paper to a silent auction for hurricane relief. I can't think of a more worthy cause, but to see all that paper that was probably $.50 a sheet made me a little bit sick. I still have tons of paper, which is why I'll be making page kits tonight. Get the pictures with the paper and get the pages done. I'll be coming home after my meeting tomorrow and heading straight to church for Bible study. Thursday night is MOPS. Friday night is dinner out with our Sunday school class. Saturday I have classes at the scrapbook store and an afternoon movie trip to use the movie tickets that expire on the 22nd. Sunday I have a bridal shower to go to. I think next week I just have my night class and Bible study. Thanks be to God! I can see the light! Have a fabulous Tuesday and Wednesday!

Wonder Woman on the Edge

So, those of you who know me personally would probably describe me as busy. Most people do. They begin sentences with "I know you're really busy, but could you..." My answer is typically "Yes! What do you need and when." No More! I officially hit the point today that I feel I have to start refusing offers. This is going to kill me. I really like my reputation as a "go-to girl" and I am pretty darn good at getting the job done. Today, I reached capacity and I have literally been worried sick wondering how my family and I will survive the next 12 weeks. The morning started out great. I got to work, put my lunch in the fridge and started the computer. The server was down. Bad omen #1. My friend and coworker, Heather, stops to tell me that the text books for my class have arrived.

"For what class? The class I'm teaching in December?"

"No, your CDA class that starts tonight."

"The same class I taught last year that started in December?" (Panic is now setting in.)

"Yes, but we changed the schedule and it starts tonight. What did you think I was asking about when I asked if you were ready for your class last week?"

" I thought you were asking about my new Bible study on Wednesday nights!!!! Holy crap! I have nothing ready for a class that starts in less than 8 hours!"

The day declined rapidly from there. I rearranged my afterwork appoinments to the afternoon and managed to be back to work in time for said class. We did an icebreaker activity, introductions, and a very brief overview of the course. I had gone home to email my syllabus and course outline to work, but the stupid server at the university wouldn't let my attachments through. What the hell?!?!?

I honestly don't care that the class started 12 weeks earlier than I was anticipating and it will be nice to have the extra money for Christmas and bills. It's just that I'm a planner, and I really wanted to do some tweaking and updating of my course that is not going to be possible now.

I also would have never signed up for a Wednesday night Bible study that lasts through Christmas had I known that I'd be in class until 9:00 every Monday for the next 12 weeks. I am thinking that Greg will have to join a Bible study so he and Carson will at least be at the church with me on Wednesdays. Maybe we can have family time on the way there and back.

Carson and I will be attending the first meeting of a new Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) group Thursday night. This will be a once a month commitment, thank goodness.

I also still play Bunco once a month. It often falls on the same week as MOPS and my scrapbooking group.

I don't mean to sound whiny, and I do realize that I have brought all of this, other than the unexpected class, upon myself. It's just that I love all of these things and hate to give anything up. Looking back, I can't believe I ever used to work full time and still got everything done. Of course, this is the first time I've had a full time and 2 part time jobs and several hobbies and group affiliations and a child. Woe is me tonight. I get a little bit sick to my stomach thinking about it all. What happened to the days when I could work 8 hours, go to class 6 hours, go "out" for 4 hours and sleep hardly at all. I feel the big 3-0 gaining on me fast. You'll know I've drowned in a sea of comittments if I don't blog again for awhile. Wish me luck and a few extra hours in the day. I need all the help I can get.

Back from the Beach!

Hello Readers! Just a note to let you know that I arrived home safely this evening. We had a fantastic time at the nearly empty beach and a great visit with Greg's aunt and uncle. Everything went smoothly on the drive down and back. Gas was scarce in Pensacola, but we managed to fill up for $2.54 a gallon with a brief, 25 minute wait at a WalMart gas station yesterday.

The devastation that Pensacola suffered from Hurricane Ivan last year is still evident everywhere. It was so bizarre to see huge boats marooned several miles inland and just left to rot. Houses were empty and left to decay all along the coast. Piles of debris still line the streets and crews work around the clock to continue clearing the roadsides where people are told to pile what remains of their homes and businesses. Two vehicles were literally lying in the middle of the beach half full of sand and rusting. I cannot imagine how long it will take New Orleans to recover, given the level of poverty there vs the affluence in Pensacola. If million dollar, insured beach homes still aren't repaired, I hate to think about what will happen to the homes of the impoverished in New Orleans. Greg's uncle said it can take years to move up the waiting list for a contractor. The power of nature is unbelievable.

Here are a few pics of my beach bums. When we woke up at the hotel in Alabama this morning, Carson said, "It's day! We get to go to the beach!" How I wish that were true, but it's also good to be home!

Beach Bound

Please keep my family in your thoughts tomorrow evening. We have had a trip to Pensacola Beach, FL planned for several months and we are leaving tomorrow after work. We've changed our route to avoid going through Mobile and we will be spending the night in Brimingham, AL. Greg called today and the hotel assured us we will still have a room. I am hesitant about going, especially since Greg's aunt, who we are going to stay with in Florida, called tonight to tell us that they are running out of gas in places. We should be fine as long as we fill up before we cross into Alabama. If we could get time off from work at a later time, we would cancel, but it's now or never. I'll try to check in when we get there. Pensacola never lost power and they opened the beach back up today.

If they were letting people into New Orleans, we would be going there to help this weekend. We were just there in May and love the city. The hotel chain that Greg works for sustained moderate damage at the New Orleans location. The lobby and lower level meeting rooms are flooded and several windows were blown out. He may volunteer to help with the clean up when the city is drained. The Mobile, AL and Jackson, MS locations are without power and are booked to capacity. We had reservations at the Jackson location for tomorrow night. We changed to Birmingham on Sunday when we could tell the hurricane was going to be bad.

Anyway, I realize my problems pale in comparison to what the hurricane victims are going through, but if you have a minute tomorrow night, please send up an extra prayer for my family's safe travel and comfort for all of people suffering in the gulf states. Thanks! -Amy

Beautiful New Orleans

The way I remember this beautiful city. Photos taken in May of this year.

Who's Your Daddy?

I received the following note from Carson's teacher today. It recounted a conversation between her and Carson.

Teacher: What's your mommy's name?

C: Mommy

T: What would I call her?

C: Amy

T: What's your Daddy's name?

C: Daddy

T: What does your mommy call him?

C: Poopybutt

That's my boy!

The annual "visit"

Today was my annual gynecolgical exam and I am happy to say that it was rather pleasant, overall. Not the actual exam, of course, but the visiting with my doctor in St Louis is great. She is so down-to-earth and genuinely concerned. I was sweating bullets after they placed me in the exam room because a rather handsome young medical student was lingering in the hall. I had my speech prepared as to why I was not going to allow him to be the room, even for the sake of teaching, when a cute, fashionably dressed female medical student knocked on my door and asked if she could do my exam. Absolutely. Sigh of relief! My doctor looked at my photo album of Carson from birth to present and chatted with me during the exam. I love these people! Dr. Stephens informed me that she would like to get us started on "Carson II" next fall. I'll think about that.

My appointment lasted 2 hours, so Mom and I didn't get as much shopping in as we had planned. We managed to make it to Value City, Trader Joe's, World Market, and Target Greatland. I got some great deals on clothes to wear in Florida this weekend. We are still planning to make the trip to Pensacola. We've rerouted our trip and will be staying in Birmingham, AL, rather than Jackson, MS. We are hoping to avoid the 1 million people who will be trying to get back to New Orleans. What a mess. Thank goodness the clean-up efforts can begin.

Yesterday we went to visit a friend in the hospital. She is 31 weeks pregnant and having preterm labor. The doctors were going to turn her magnesium sulfate off at 5:00 yesterday and hope her contractions didn't return. We haven't heard anything today, but please keep Christa and baby Kanon in your prayers. We also went to my friend Holly's son, Peyton's, birthday party. Carson had a fun time playing with the other boys and eating cake. His face and hands were stained with green icing.

Tomorrow it's back to work! I'm counting down the hours until Thursday at 3:00 when I'll be headed to the beach!

Katrina Can Kiss My Keister

Look at this crap:

Katrina better leave some sand on Pensacola beach since I have been telling my son for weeks that we are going to build sand castles next weekend. Hopefully, the storm will lose steam and just dump rain on Pensacola. We're still going unless they lose power or the damage is really significant. By next weekend the forecast shows sunny skies. That won't do me much good if there is no beach. I'll be watching closely. If we don't go, there is a Labor Day family fish fry we can go to here. It just doesn't sound nearly as fun as building castles in the sand.

So Sad

I got to experience firsthand just how terrible childcare in Missouri has gotten and how little we value our children. I visited what is quite possibly the worst childcare facility I have ever seen. I went to rate them for an accreditation program they want to be a part of. There is money involved if they get accepted. They had known for weeks that we were coming today. It was horrible. I'll spare the details to protect my job, but I will say that I have never seen a sorrier program in my life. Children were literally being humiliated and neglected in front of me and the other evaluators. The equipment in the center and the playground posed serious safety threats. The teachers had little, if any, knowledge of child development and appropriate practice. Imagine what they do when we're not there. This is a licensed facility. It will do little, if anything, to contact the licensing rep. The reps are so bogged down, thanks to drastic layoffs of about 50% of the licensing reps this year, that child care centers in Missouri now get one visit a year from the licensing reps. Our illustrious Governor is to thank for that decision. Way to protect our kids, Matt! I thank God that I do not have to rely on a childcare provider for care for Carson. What a sad day.

Home from Music City

Our trip to Nashville was typical. We had fun and barely saw my brother-in-law and his wife and son. We went to the fair together last night and even then they didn't stay with us. It's really better that way because we have very different marriage ans parenting styles and we just don't see eye-to-eye on too many things. Greg's parents try their best to keep us all happy and things usually end up with us doing our own thing, which is fine with us! Anyway, here's what Greg, Carson, and I did this weekend:

On Saturday afternoon we went to the Parthenon. This is the only full scale replica of the Parthenon in the world. I think it's weird that it's in the country music capitol of the world. It was very big (that's me and Carson standing in the middle of the picture) and didn't really have too much to look at inside, other than this:

You can't begin to imagine how big this statue of Athena really is. Her robes are plated in actual gold. It's even more gaudy than it looks in the picture. Carson thought "Aunt Thena" was pretty cool.

Greg took this cool picture of Carson on the steps of the Parthenon.

That night we went to the Wilson County Fair. It rained just before we got there and the heat index was 106, so the rain made it more like a sauna rather than cooling things off. We saw pig races, ate yummy grilled corn on the cob and funnel cakes, and the boys had a blast riding rides since it was bracelet night.

Saturday morning I got to shop at 2 scrapbook stores. The Creation Station, which was awesome, and The Crop Shop, which was ok. The Creation Station is in a neat renovated factory building in Franklin Tennessee. The factory is full of neat, artsy shops. I could spend the whole day there. Greg wasn't as impressed. They have an animal adoption center, so Carson was thrilled to get to pet all the cats in the cat room. I started sneezing within minutes. No cats for us.

Tomorrow it's back to work. I'm switching cubicles this week, which I am very excited about. I'll be getting a flat screen monitor and new computer and hopefully a little more air circulation. It's hot in the corner I've been in! Have a great week!

Strange things happen when you Google yourself

I came across this while Googling my name this evening. Subtlety is not this guy's forte. Poor sap. I wonder if the other Amy ever said "yes"?

Caution: This will only be appreciated by my liberal buddies

There is a democrat version of this floating around the net. I didn't find it too funny. Go figure. My Repub friends (yes, I do have a few) will probably find the Dem version hysterical. Oh wait, does the GOP find anything hysterical?!? Gotcha! I'd stop reading now if you consider yourself conservative. This is funny stuff if you're not. :)

You Might Be A Republican If...

You think "proletariat" is a type of cheese.

You've named your kids "Deduction one" and "Deduction two"

You've tried to argue that poverty could be abolished if people were just allowed to keep more of their minimum wage.

You've ever referred to someone as "my (insert racial or ethnic minority here) friend"

You've ever tried to prove Jesus was a capitalist and opposed to welfare.

You're a pro-lifer, but support the death penalty.

You think Huey Newton is a cookie.

The only union you support is the Baseball Players, because heck, they're richer than you.

You think you might remember laughing once as a kid.

You once broke loose at a party and removed your neck tie.

You call mall rent-a-cops "jack-booted thugs."

You've ever referred to the moral fiber of something.

You've ever uttered the phrase, "Why don't we just bomb the sons of bitches."

You've ever said, "I can't wait to get into business school."

You've ever called a secretary or waitress "Tootsie."

You answer to "The Man."

You don't think "The Simpsons" is all that funny, but you watch it because that Flanders fellow makes a lot of sense.

You fax the FBI a list of "Commies in my Neighborhood."

You don't let your kids watch Sesame Street because you accuse Bert and Ernie of "sexual deviance."

You scream "Dit-dit-ditto" while making love.

You've argued that art has a "moral foundation set in Western values."

When people say "Marx," you think "Groucho."

You've ever yelled, "Hey hippie, get a haircut."

You think Birkenstock was that radical rock concert in 1969.

You argue that you need 300 handguns, in case a bear ever attacks your home.

Vietnam makes a lot of sense to you.

You point to Hootie and the Blowfish as evidence of the end of racism in America.

You've ever said civil liberties, schmivil schmiberties.

You've ever said "Clean air? Looks clean to me."

You've ever called education a luxury.

You look down through a glass ceiling and chuckle.

You wonder if donations to the Pentagon are tax-deductable.

You came of age in the '60s and don't remember Bob Dylan.

You own a vehicle with an "Ollie North: American Hero" sticker.

You're afraid of the liberal media."

You ever based an argument on the phrase, "Well, tradition dictates...."

You ever told a child that Oscar the Grouch "lives in a trash can because he is lazy and doesn't want to contribute to society."

You've ever urged someone to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, when they don't even have shoes.

You confuse Lenin with Lennon.

Workin' 9 to 5

Actually, more like 7 to 5. I finally got to start working regular office hours this week. I leave at 3 and go see one of my therapy babies each afternoon for my First Steps jobs. On Fridays, I'll be working First Steps all day. I love the girls in my new office. It's very relaxed and easy to feel comfortable. So far, so good!

Friday we're leaving to go see Greg's brother, sister-in-law, and nephew in Nashville. We'll be going to a huge county fair on Saturday. It was a lot of fun last year. We haven't seen Andrew, our nephew, for several months. Carson talks about him all the time and is so excited to go visit. Greg and I always stay at the Drury hotel when we visit and his parents stay at the house. There is a long history around why we do this, which I will go into detail about at a later time. I'm too tired tonight. I'm hoping to get to swim while we're there. I haven't gotten to go to water aerobics for several weeks and I'm really missing the water. I tried a new ball class with my buddy, Lisa, Monday morning. The class was killer and I ended up throwing up and getting a migraine that lasted all day and night. Think it may be a little out of my league right now. I've fallen off the exercise wagon and I'm really struggling to get back on. Same with the eating healthy wagon. I feel like crap and really need to get my self back on track.

Mary Catherine has decided on my matron of honor dress. I think it's pretty, but I am scared of what my butt is going to like in this dress if I don't lose some serious poundage. Another incentive to get my butt in gear. How much weight can a person possibly lose in 8 months? I have to order the dress soon and I am really worried about what size to order. Should I be optimistic and try hard to get the weight off or should I just order the size I wear now, and hope that I can have it altered to fit when I lose weight? Decisions, decisions! Your opinions are welcome now. :)

I'm off for a First Steps training in Sikeston all day tomorrow. Tomorrow night we have back-to-school night for Carson and I'll be packing for the weekend. Take care!

My trip to the the capitol...

was a blast! So far, I am loving this new job. Heather and I scrapbooked in my hotel room every night. I got all 22 pages done for a swap I'm in tomorrow and I finished 12 pages for my cruise album. It rocked to have all that uniterrupted time to scrapbook without anyone needing me.

At the training, I learned so much about how to teach adults, which is what I will primarily be doing in my new position. I love children, but I am so glad that in this job I get to teach adults about children, which is what I truly love to do. I've thought many times before about finishing my PhD and I may end up doing that sooner than I thought.SEMO offers a decent incentive program for completing a PhD. We'll see how things go during my first contract year as Inclusion Specialist.

I'd only been to Jefferson City once before, and I really didn't pay much attention then. The town is getting better,as far as more large retailiers and chain restaurants, but there are still so many dumpy areas. I wasn't expecting The Emerald City, but I just thought things would be nicer. My training was in the Governor's building, located across the street from the Governor's Mansion. Matt wasn't there. I walked by several times hoping to find him lounging in his swing or walking on the grounds. No luck. Probably best, given that I'm really unhappy with our fair governor at the moment, as I have been since he was elected. Apparently, I'm not alone. I read last week that his apporval rating was at 35%. I don't know how accurate that is, but given the comments I heard at my training meetings, everyone's pretty diappointed with how Missouri legislators are treating our children. I'll be in Jeff city fairly often with the new job, so there will be plenty of opprotunities for protest on the capitol steps. I've got some buddies who will either be in jail with me or be happy to bail me out (hi Clubbs family!)

The mall sucked. We ended up making one quick walk through last night and heading back to the hotel to scrapbook. We did spend a fair amount of time in TJ Maxx, where I got Carson the coolest magnets, that he is in love with. I also snagged some great Christmas gifts on sale.

Heather and I were overjoyed to find the only scrapbook store in Jefferson City. It was decent and located next to a nice Target, which made the evening even better. We were able to feed the scrap supply addiction and get some actual snack rations right across the street.

Greg and I ended up taking Carson to Homecomers tonight. He had an absolute blast. He was very disappointed to find out that he couldn't keep the boat he selected out of the "Pick a Duckl" pond, and was very reluctant to put it back in the water and select a plastic horn instead. That horn is obnoxious and may find it's way to the trash can one night next week. He and I rode the Ferris wheel and the flying pink elephant ride together and he and Greg went down the giant slide together. He had so much fun.

I am off to shower and go to sleep in my own bed! Yay!

I've been tagged!

I've been tagged!
Dotti tagged me to:

List ten songs that you are currently digging... it doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words, or even if they're no good but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions, the artists, and the ten songs in your blog. Then tag five other random people to see what they're listening to.

I listen to all kinds of music and have such great memories surrounding songs.

1. Me and You by Kenny Chesney-the song Greg and I danced to after getting engaged and again as our first dance as husband and wife.
2. Push It by Salt N Peppa- my friend, Heather, busted out singing this on our drive home from Jeff City today. It reminds us of big hair and jr. high dances.
3. Georga Rain by Trisha Yearwood-reminds me of carefree young adult days and Trish looks like she's lost weight in the video. Is she ever gonna marry Garth?
4. Canon in D by Pachelbel- makes me teary-eyed thinking about my birdesmaids walking down the aisle before me
5. Stand by Me by Ben E King-love the song and the movie. Debra Ireland and I would rent Stand by Me and Top Gun every weekend we spent together back in grade school. When the movies were over, we would prank call radio dj's at 2:00 am. Now that is a good time.
6. My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music-brings back fond memories of my role as Marta Von Trapp back in '85.
7. Island Boy by Kenny Chesney. Reminds me of my husband. He would be so happy living in the Caribbean.
8. Gloria Patri-I get chills thinking about how many people have sung this song before me when we sing it in church every Sunday.
9. On Top of Spaghetti-A crowd favorite and the first song I ever heard Carson sing on his own.
10. Over the Rainbow by Judy Garland-a classic and who doesn't wish troubles melted like lemon drops?

I tag Brooke, Bob, Becky, and Dawn, a fellow Disney fan whose blog I recently found and am loving!

On the road again...

I'm leaving. I wish I was leaving on a jet plane, but alas, I'm leaving in a rental car. At least we don't have to drive the hoopty Taurus station wagon that has "Workshop on Wheels" painted on the side of it. It's the office car. It gets you some really strange looks when you're driving down the interstate. It doesn't say "Child Care Resource and Referral" or "Southeast Missouri State University", just "Workshop on Wheels." It's pretty funny really. I drove the ol' workshop all the way to Columbia, MO and back last week. Yep, lots of funny looks from my fellow drivers.

Today I got all of my errands done since I'll be gone until late Friday. I'll be missing the Jackson Homecomer's Celebration this week. I was feeling sad about it until I realized that in 2 weeks, I'll be at the Wilson County Tennessee Fair and on Labor Day weekend I'll be at Pensacola Beach. What's left of it at least. Makes me feel not-so-bad about missing Homecomers. I think Greg is planning to take Carson one night this week.

I got some bad news about one of my therapy kiddos today. He will be losing his Medicaid coverage on August 18. He has to breathe through a trach tube and must have nursing care in his home at night and without Medicaid, he will not have any coverage to pay for the nursing care. Some of you may remember me talking about Colton when he was very ill. He was born at 25 weeks gestation and weighed 1 lb 7 oz. He will be 1 on August 18 and is doing very well, despite the trach. His parents did what they thought was the right thing and have been paying for COBRA health insurance coverage from her former employer. Colton's Medicaid is being taken away because his parents chose to be responsible and provide additional coverage for their child, even though COBRA is very expensive. His COBRA policy will expire in 6 months, leaving him with nothing. His family is very worried. Please pray for Colton and his family. I can only imagine how terrified they must be for their son. He is also going to see a reconstructive surgeion in Cincinatti this month to see about having his trach taken out and his throat reconstructed. This Medicaid ordeal may mean postponing the surgery. I'm not feeling uber political tonight, so I'll just say that this sucks, and I hate it when there is a Republican majority. 'Nuf said.

I'm off to snuggle with my little guy and pack for the trip.

Happy belated birthday to my buddy, Becky!!! (It's 29, right?!?)

See ya'll on Friday!

Honey! I'm home! (for 3 days!)

I got home around 9:30 last night. I watched a little TV and went straight to bed without even checking the email . I was whooped. Driving almost 900 miles in 48 hours tends to wear a person out. We met with Dave Ramsey's right-hand mand, Russ Carrol, in Nashville. We are the proud owners of a new budget, 13 week Financial Peace University kit, (which we will be starting tomorrow), and a new set of financial goals. It was worth the trip. Russ was a pretty nice guy. Some of what he said had already sunk in when we hit Opry Mills Mall. I found 2 great bargains on Christmas gifts and bought nothing for myself. Greg bought us each a piece of candy at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. The total was $7.95. I just about crapped. It was really good candy, but for $8, I could have gotten several packages of candy bars at home. Russ would be proud. The biggest change in our budget is the $20 a week allowance for eating out. That's not much. I love to cook, but it's going to take me awhile to get back in the swing of things as far as advance meal planning and grocery buying. We'll get started on that as soon as I get done with all of these out-of-town business trips. I leave Monday night to spend the rest of the week in Jefferson City with my friend and now co-worker, Heather M. Fisher. We'll have a blast, but I have a feeling I am really going to be ready to get home on Friday. I'll be finished training out-of-town until the first or second week in November, then it's back to Jeff City. The last week of Novmber I'll be training at the Lake of the Ozarks. As far as I know, that will be it until next year. I hope.

I had a blast at the training in Columbia. I got to rate the neatest child care center I have ever seen. It was a home daycare and the owner/teacher was absolutely wonderful with the kids. I cannot say enough about her. She said she makes very little money because she puts everything she makes back into the school. You could tell. I have never seen such wonderful cultural diversity in a center. The children were listening to a mix of Zydeco, West African music and Brazilian music on the CD changer that morning. They try recipes from around the world and the parents get copies of the recipes. The children sit under an art tree, (a huge branch covered in their own artwork) and read books that they have made themselves. Amazing. I love Ms. Phyliss. I'm actually going to see if Heather wants to stop in and see her center on the way to Jefferson City. She will go nuts since she's the trainer for childcare providers and offers technical assistance to providers. If I didn't need money, I would quit tomorrow and open a center like Ms. Phyliss. She only has 10 kids enrolled and has 4 computers. That's unheard of here. Here are some pics of her school. It's just 2 rooms in her house, so it's very cramped, but very organized. I love it!

Cool, isn't it? Makes you want to go play there, doesn't it?!?! There were no discipline issues while we were there and I have never seen happier kids than the kids at this center. They love Ms. Phyliss. Me too!

This afternoon we took advantage of Missouri's tax-free weekend and bought Carson's school supplies. He wanted so badly to go to Andy's Frozen custard when we were done shopping, but he fell asleep while I was in Hobby Lobby. Greg and I got custard, but he sleeping so soundly that we didn't get him any since we weren't finished with all of the shopping. Greg stayed with him in the car while I finished up at Target. Carson awoke as we were leaving the parking lot and screamed, "When are we gonna get ice cream?!?!?" He got a little dish at the Jackson Dairy Queen and we called it a night. He ate about 3 bites before declaring that he would rather have fruit snacks. Typical.

I'm off to work on scrapbook projects that are due for a few upcoming swaps that I'm in. Heather and I are taking are scrap stuff with us to training next week and I'd like to be able to work onthe cruise album the whole time rather than my swap stuff. We'll see how much I get done. Have a super Sunday!

Gotta go, kids!

I'll be leaving for Columbia in the morning and will not have internet access for the next 5 days. I may die. The hotel does not have a business center. They have wireless internet service, but I have no laptop. This sucks. I'll be on the Mizzou campus, so perhaps I can sneak some online time somewhere. I should get all of my outstanding paperwork and reading caught up! I'll be home from Columbia Thursday and leaving for Nashville the minute I hit Cape. I still won't have internet access. This also sucks. By Friday I should be through my internet detox and hopefully won't beat my door down to get back to the computer when we get home that evening. If anyone really needs to speak with me, I'll have the cell. If you don't have my number, you probably don't really need to speak with me. :)

I leave you with a selection of my hotcodez.com country music favorites playing on the video player. If you don't like country, turn off the sound. The picture is really bad, but there's apparently nothing that can be done, since it's bad on every site I've seen that has it. Hope you enjoy it. If you miss me, come and listen to a tune. Actually, that may be depressing since I put 2 sad songs in the rotation. Oh well, see you all on Friday night. I'm off to learn how to access quality child care programs. There are field trips involved so at least it's not 3 days of lecture. Yipppeee! See ya soon! -Amy

I Love Paula Deen!

I love getting up each Saturday and knowing that Paula will be making something fabulous for me on the Food Network. She uses tons of butter and cream cheese. How can you go wrong with butter and cream cheese? Today she made these yummy little biscuit chili cups, mini Mexican pizzas, and little banana parfaits. Delish! I love that she uses everyday ingredients and rarely uses complicated cooking methods. Many of her recipes remind me of Pampered Chef recipes. I love Pampered Chef. I've even been a consultant at two different times in the past.

I am planning to make this recipe today. I just haven't figured out what to make to accompany it. Paula served it with chicken and dumplings. I'm not really up for doing the whole chicken and dumplings thing today, though chicken and dumlings is one of my favorite foods.

I'm still looking for a good recipe to take to a birthday party tomorrow. My friend, Becky, is throwing a Scooby Doo bash for her son, Matthew's, fourth birthday. It's an outdoor affair, so I'm thinking the chili biscuit cups will have to wait for a cooler day. Maybe I'll make Club House Chicken Squares. They're yummy and always a hit. I'll think about that.

Club House Chicken Squares
2 packages (8oz) refrigerated crescent rolls
1 package (8oz) cream cheese, softened
2 tbsp mayo
1 small clove garlic, pressed
1 tsp All Purpose Dill Mix (optional)
1 can (10 oz) chunk white chicken, drained and flaked*
1/2 small cucumber
2 plum tomatoes
1/2 cup (2 oz) shredded cheddar cheese
6 slices bacon, crisp-cooked and crumbled

Oven to 375

Unroll one package of crescent rolls across one end of the bar pan with longest sides of dough across the width of the pan. Repeat with other package. Use the baker's roller to seal the perforations and press up the sides to form a crust. Bake 12-15 minutes, till golden, then remove to stackable cooling rack and cool completely.

Place cream cheese, mayo, garlic and seasoning mix in a bowl, mix until smooth. Spread this mixture over the cooled crust using the large spreader. Sprinkle chicken over filling. Score cucumber lengthwise. Remove seeds with corer. Thinly slice using slice & grate. Cut slices into quarters. Slice tomatoes in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Dice tomatoes. Grate cheese. Sprinkle cucumber, tomatoes, cheese and bacon over filling. Slice with pizza cutter and serve.

If I didnt' have this desire to save the children of the world, I would be quite content staying home to play June Cleaver. I'm actually highly qualified. My master's degree actually reads "Masters Degree in Home Economics Education." They have sinced changed the name to "Family and Consumer Sciences." More politically correct, but I kind of like the retro chic of my home-ec degree. I'm off to surf the Food Network archives a little further. I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning.

If you dish it, take it, or shut up!

Legislators need to hear concerns

Tuesday, July 26, 2005
To the editor:

Beware of the telephone police. Legislators say there are too many phone calls about Medicaid, and they must be stopped. Social services workers are told they must stop telling their clients to call legislators.

Who is working for whom? The people have a right to call their legislators about any issue they are concerned about as often as they want and when they want. There is no limit. It sounds like they want to send the phone police out and stop this harassment immediately.

Legislators need to be concerned about the 100,000 people knocked out of medical coverage. If I was one of those people I would be calling too. The Medicaid system needs to be on the agenda of every legislator. Spending in government needs to be brought under control, but dismantling Medicaid was the wrong course of action.

JOHN COOLEY, Jackson

I totally agree. I happen to know John's wife, Lisa. She's a great lady and great therapist. John has cut a Christian album with some other local doctors. I digress. When I read the original story covering this issue a few days I ago, I laughed out loud. The legislators actually told the call center supervisiors at Medicaid that they were not allowed to tell callers to contact their legislators. Apparently, they don't like being flooded with calls from angry citizens who are now without health coverage due recent cuts. Go figure. I'm guessing the poorly paid Medicaid call center employees are pretty tired of hearing from them too, especially since they have no control over what has happened to these poor people, yet are forced to bear the brunt of the frustration. This makes me want to call my legislators every day just to bitch. Tired of calls? Too freakin' bad! The last time I checked anyone could and should let their legislators know of their concerns and I'd say that being without health insurance is a pretty damn big concern. I can only assume that the legislators are too busy plotting what they can cut next to listen to the current concerns of their constituencies. These people suck.

Busy, Busy!

That's what I'll be for the next 2 weeks. I work tomorrow and Thursday. I may work Friday, but I'm hoping to avoid it. I have the weekend to get my house in order before I leave for training in Columbia Mon-Thurs. I arrive home Thursday evening at which time I will be picking up Greg and driving to Nashville for our appointment with financial guru, Dave Ramsey. We're tired of having debt and want to know the best way to get everything, including our house and student loans, paid for. We want no payments. Dave is on the radio here each afternoon. He's very informative. He's on from 1-4 on 1550 AM. His book is great too. It's called Total Money Makeover.I think we're actually meeting with his sidekick, Russ, but I am still anxious to hear what they tell us. My current Edward Jones financial advisor does not subscribe to the same philosophies as Dave, but she's also never been nearly as far in debt as he has. I am not looking forward to driving from Columbia to Nashville in the same afternoon/evening, but hopefully, it will be worth it. We'll drive home after our appointment on Friday. I'll be home for the weekend, go to work on Monday, and leave Monday evening for training in Jefferson City until Thursday. I think I'll be finished with training for awhile after that. I hope. I am tired just thinking about it all.

This weekend we went to a wedding reception. Greg told me the wrong time, so we missed the dinner and cake cutting. We arrived during the wedding party dance. We stayed for 30 minutes. Carson was crabby and we' were all hungry. On Sunday, we went to Sunday school, ate lunch with friends at Port Cape Girardeau and hung out at home for the rest of the day. It was very nice. I have no idea why all of my text is now being underlined. Oh well! My computer training ended today and I could not be happier. My eyes hurt so badly last night that I went to bed at 7:45. It was still very much light outside. Today wasn't as bad. The instructor was a computer person, not a teacher, and you could tell she wasn't used to teaching. She was rude and impatient. I hope her comment cards reflect her poor attitude. I'm a little bitter. Did I mention how rude she was???

Better go. It's time to get Carson ready for bed. Tomorrow is his last day of summer school. He couldn't care less, but I'm excited for him. Later.

A is for Amy ...

and afterglow. That was the word I chose as part of my introduction at tonight's "Surprise Party". We had to tell our names and a sexual word that began with the first letter of our first names. There were some creative combinations. My boss and co-host, Naughty Nancy, was gracious enough to open her home to me and my girlfriends tonight. I like to pretend that her house is mine whenever I go over there. My house would fit in one corner of her house. I think a good time was had by all. The shopping is done in secret so I don't know what everyone bought, but a few girls had some pretty big bags. I'll stop there since we agreed that what happens at Nancy's stays at Nancy's. 'Nuf said.

Tomorrow I'm working for First Steps until 3:00 then I'm teaching some private scrapbooking classes for a lady at the scrapbook store. She's taking three of my classes in the same day. It should be fun. We have a wedding reception on Saturday and I hope nothing to do on Sunday. I need a day of rest. Good night to all of my newly empowered "Surprise Party" friends! Have a wonderful evening!

Panic at Gravois Bluffs

So, I go out to my car after checking out at Michael's and realize I cannot find my cell phone anywhere. I panicked. You would have thought I had lost my child. Apparently I was talking so fast that the workers at Kohl's (where I had tried on clothes and thought I may have lost the phone) could not understand me. They finally understood and called literally every department to see if the phone had been turned in. Nope. A lady who was checking out offered to call my phone repeatedly so I could hear it ringing as I retraced my steps. It was nowhere. I think the customers in the dressing room may have been a bit annoyed by me banging on the doors around the stall I had used and frantically asking them to search for my phone. As a last resort, I used the phone in Customer Service to call the house of the client where I had my appointment. Her dad walked to where my car had been parked and started laughing. The phone had fallen out of my car into the driveway and was somehow untouched by the three vehicles that had left the driveway after me. It is now safe and sound in the new purse I bought especially for the cell phone security pockets it has. That baby is locked up tight. I was freaking out more so than usual because since we have no home line, the cell phone is my only means of communication with the outside world. I would die in a day if put in solitary confinement. Thank goodness my precious little phone is back!

I am exhausted. I had a fun day, bought lots of stuff, including clothes for my new job and yummy food from Trader Joe's and I am heading for bed. Tomorrow night is my party! I'll check in if I get home early enough. Later.

Let's go here today

Doesn't that like nice? It's Anguilla, voted The Travel Channel's best all around beach for 2005. We could be there late tonight. I'm heading for St Louis and could go ahead and book the filght. :) This is actually a contender for my 2006 vacation. This will be the last vacation before we get started on Franklin Baby #2. I think I deserve Anguilla.

New Job!

I was officially hired yesterday as the new Inclusion Specialist for Child Care Resource and Referral at Southeast Missouri State University. Yay me! This was the third time I have interviewed for this position in the past 3 years. The first time I was not aware that I was a "pawn" interview and that someone within the office already had the position. The second time I made it to the top 2 contenders and lost to equity issues. My time has finally come! The first girl left to stay home with her kids and the second left as soon as she had completed had Master's degree at the employee tuition rate. Nice of her. My position involves helping educate child care providers about accepting kids with special needs as well as helping parents find child care for kids with special needs. Right up my alley. I complained all day yesterday that I was sure I hadn't gotten the job. I was working with a former boss of mine, who was also listed as a job reference on my resume. I whined that I was sure I didn't get the job again because the supervisor had not called any of my references. I was wrong. While I was inside whining, the supervisor was calling my cell phone in the car to offer me the positon. I am such a weiner sometimes. I start August 1. I am so relieved to finally be a permanant member of the professional staff of SEMO. I'll have my very own cubicle :) and be right around the corner from my dear friend, Heather M. Fisher, who I triumphed over in the 3rd grade singing competition that lead to my role as Marta in the Jackson High School production of The Sound of Music. She still hasn't gotten over that. I may start belting out a little Do-Re-Mi just to torment her. I can't wait to start! I'm keeping my First Steps positions, but scaling back on my caseloads.

Tomorrow I'm heading to Fenton for a 2:30 meeting for First Steps. I'm going early to shop at Gravois Bluffs and to make a run to Trader Joe's for some rations. I love shopping by myself. I like shopping with others, but it's really nice to take my time and not worry about rushing anyone or being rushed. My mother-in-law can't believe that I don't mind eating in a sit-down restaurant by myself. I'm used to it. I like to think that the diners around me wonder what I'm doing alone pouring over the stack of files I will ineveitably be updating while I wait. Probably not, but I like to think so.

Thursday is my long-awaited Surprise Party. I had one of these parties as my bachelorette party and we had a blast. I was at one last year that was very fun and so hilarious. I can't wait to meet the "Surprise Lady". She sounds like a grandma. Who knows what I'll be coming home with that night! I haven't made a wish list yet and may just see what strikes my fancy that evening. I'm hoping that someone shows up since I've had several "no" RSVPs. I have the bucket of Mojito's chillin' in the freezer and lots of yummy snacks waiting for preparation.

I'm off to surf the net and read some other blogs. Later!

I can see the light and I'm racing toward it

Vacation Bible School may be the death of me. My son appears to have suffered from selective hearing loss during the 3 and half hours we've spent at church each night this week. He can't hear me screaming, "No, Carson! We have to stay seated until all our friends are finished eating." "Carson, come back! The other kids are still working on crafts." "Carson! We do not climb under the pews!" We've made several trips to the hallway for timeouts each night. Timeouts work on other kids. Carson is immune. Last night's conversation went something like this:
"Carson, if you don't stay on the carpet squares and dance with other kids, we'll have to call Daddy to take you home."

"Ok, I'll go with Daddy."

"You won't get to come back to Bible school for the rest of the week if you can't listen to Mommy."

"Ok, I'll play at my house."

These are not the responses I was going for. Next year, I may be taking a break from Bible school for many reasons. Hopefully, my child will have matured into a mindful 4-year-old by then. I definitely won't be helping in his classroom any more. It also drives me crazy to see all of these mothers of preschoolers, who are all members of my church, drop their toddlers off at 5:15 and not show their faces again until 8:30. I'm not sure why this still amazes me, but I still look at them in disbelief when they disappear for 3 hours of child-free solitude each evening, without giving a second thought staying to help with the other 100 children enrolled in VBS. I want to scream, "'This is your church! Could you maybe help out a night or two once in a blue moon???" (Get ready Becky! You're time is coming next week!) I need to shut up and consider myself lucky that I have it together enough to ALWAYS be in that 10% of the population that does 100% of the work. Keep that in mind if you need some help. I hardly ever say "No".

Enough with the ranting. I see the light at the end of the tunnel. The tunnel ends with the concluding program tomorrow evening. Last year Carson made his way all around the altar area by climbing through the legs of all of the older kids. I'll be happy if he stands for a single song this year. We'll see! The joys of VBS!

Enough ranting

Attention! Calling all decent human beings...

Yesterday was one of those job days where I think it would be best if I quit doing social work and started tending bar on a tropical island. The child I visited is only seen once a month. I asked the family how her latest round of appointments with specialists (she has club foot) had gone last month. She got new braces that are to be worn 14 hours per day. She's not being made to wear them for a single minute per day. "Beacuse she doesn't like them." Well, gosh, maybe if you had made her wear them as an infant, as you were told, rather than trying to force an almost 3-year-old child to be confined for 14 hours a day it would have worked. She will now have to have major orthpedic surgery. These parents suck.

Their 10-year-old had a birthday last week. She got $66 from friends and family. She was forced to buy her 10 member family pizza, buy fireworks for everyone, and "loan" her mother money for cigarettes. I was literally speechless, and that never happens with this mouth.

Said children's father cannot work at this time because he prefers to sit at the courthouse and watch trials all day. None of the 7 adults in the house have jobs. They live on Grandma's social security check. I am having a hard time accepting that these kids futures will probably be similar, given that as optimistic as I am about the wonders of early intervention and education, the apple rarely falls far from the tree. Hmmm....maybe culinary school and my own Food Netork show if that bartending thing doesn't work out.

Quick Update

I am very tired. I was up until 2am doing paperwork and had to get back up at 7am to get ready for my interview. Here's the quick rundown of today's happenings:

Interview went well. I'll know in about 2 weeks if I got the job. There were 5 other interviewees.

Started Bible school tonight. I am Carson's leader and he was horrible. I really wish they would have honored my request to help anywhere except in his class. The props and activities were great.

Our house is a wreck due to the in-laws power outage incident and will probably stay that way until the weekend when Bible school is over. Yuck!

Here's a pic of the sanctuary. The theme is Serengeti Trek. It looks really neat in real life. More tomorrow!

What a Weekend!

(From an email reply to Becky-she made the mistake of asking how our weekend was!)"The painting is all done except for the stripes around Carson's room. I will never paint by myself again. Carson was very good about watching movies while I was working on his room, but I was worn out and frustrated by the end of the night. Both rooms turned out well and I can't wait to get his stuff put back in his room once we get the stripes done. I got to the crop around 2. By the time we got all of the painting mess cleaned up and ate lunch, it was already 1:15 and we still hadn't eaten. I got no pages done because I sat and looked at Joni's Disney World pics and talked to everyone. It was hotter than heck in the back room. Greg and Carson came to pick me up at 4:00 with bad news. Betsy and Cecil's power and phone was knocked out Monday during the storms and he discovered when he went out yesterday to turn the air back up and water plants that everything in their 2 freezers and 2 refrigerators was spoiled. It was disgusting. We spent from 4:30-10 last night bagging up rotten food and cleaning out blood from all the spoiled meet. Cecil had 4 whole frozen ducks in one freezer. It was enough to make you gag. To make it even worse, their well pump was hit, so my parents had to bring water from their house for us to clean everything. It was quite a night. Cecil and Betsy got back at around 2am and said the house didn't even smell bad anymore. Their well got fixed this morning, but the phone line was totally fried and won't be back on until late this week. Today we went to visit the minister who married us. He's at Bonne Terre United Methodist Church now. We took the Bonne Terre Mine boat tour and it was awesome. I think Greg is uploading the pics to Carson's web site now. I finally have my interview at SEMO at 9 tomorrow morning. I am hoping all goes well and that I'll be starting there in a few weeks. We'll see! Talk to you soon!"

Touring the mine has given me new resolve to really get in shape so we can get SCUBA certified. The water has 100 ft visibility and all of the equipment and mining hats, etc was left just how it was the last day the mine was open. With the pumps turned off, the mine naturally flooded with the clearest water I have ever seen. There is one lone fish, Bonnie the Bass, that has been able to survive. She's 5 years old and hangs around the boat dock waiting to be fed. There is no other life in the mine, so she nothing to eat. She also follows the SCUBA divers around like a puppy. It was very interesting. The diving is highly regulated now, with 2 diveguides per dive. In the 70's open diving was allowed and several divers were never found. It is amazing place and just a little bit eerie.

Wish me luck on my interview tomorrow. This will be the third time I have applied and interviewed for this position. Last time I made it to the top 2, but was beat out by some affirmative action issues. The girl stayed in the position long enough to fininsh her master's degree at the employee tuition rate and then quit. Nice. I love all the girls in the office and really hope to get the job. I'll be keeping my First Steps jobs, but paring down my client list to local kiddos only. The First Steps office is just down the hall in the same building.

Vacation Bible School starts tomorrow! I am in charge of Carson's group. Should be fun! Have a great week!
